Why Does Numeracy Matter?

Numeracy is vital for success in GCSE Mathematics, as the skills underpin most other concepts in the subject. With the recent changes to the GCSE, fluency in number skills has become more important than ever. These skills will also in turn be a passport that opens up pathways into further education and/or employment. Government statistics suggest that people with good numeracy skills are much less likely to be unemployed in future, compared to those who are not competent with number work. This reinforces the fact that numeracy is not purely for those people wanting careers in maths, nearly all employers desire these skills within their workforce.

The National Numeracy website contains lots more information and resources to support the development of numeracy skills in people of all ages.
